Treeton Waverley habitat and watercourse works for Sheffield Wildlife Trust
Scope
On the outskirts of Treeton and Waverley, the River
Rother winds alongside Catcliffe Flash Nature
Reserve. Having been extensively straightened through industrial use and disconnected from its floodplain, the aim of the project was to re-establish approx. 1km length of the river to a more natural form.
Located in a suburban area on the boundary
between Sheffield and Rotherham, close to the M1 motorway it was also necessary to liaise with the various authorities to ensure compliance with all the necessary permits and legislative obligations.
Working in partnership with designers and the
Environment Agency, Sheffield and Rotherham
Wildlife Trust developed a design. Using a series of berm, or bench, features and bank re-profiling flow conditions along the river were to be altered together with the installation of pre-seeded erosion control matting to the re-profiled banks. Footpath re-positioning and public access were also key features. Further improvements are also planned to the Orgreave Weir to improve fish passage.
Visitors to the nature reserve, river and fishing pegs
during the period were not restricted and due care had to be taken, particularly to dog walkers and animals off the lead. Cross Section Detail Design
